Denis Fernandez

Senior instructor

Denis has been working as Primary Care Paramedic since 2012. He started his career in the mostly rural service of Oxford County where he fine-tuned his practice. Since 2015, he has been practising in Halton Region as a Primary Care Paramedic where he has enjoyed the increased pace. Currently enrolled in the Advanced Care Paramedic Program, Denis hopes to pursue his love for learning and advancing his practice by expanding his scope. Denis is also a member of the Tactical Paramedic Team and an alternate on the Community Paramedic Team filling the position on an as-needed basis.

    All textbooks and resources are included in the program fee and are embedded directly in the courses meaning students can seamlessly access and download textbook readings on their mobile devices or computer. Resources are regularly reviewed to ensure up-to-date standards and research. *Textbooks are available in PDF and/or eBook format.

  • Engaged evaluations

    Students are evaluated through multiple-choice questions, reflection questions and a final capstone case-study assignment. Evaluations are designed not only to assess the student's knowledge but also promote research. Students will receive a certificate upon completion of this course which may be used in your continuing education portfolio for your regulatory body.

  • Flexible learning

    Courses are designed as micro-learning experiences allowing students to easily work through each module in short bursts. This method makes it easier for those with busy schedules to get the most out of their learning. Learning can take place on or off-duty to help alleviate any scheduling challenges.   • Identify and describe the anatomy of the heart

  • Explain the cardiac cycle

  • Explain the cardiac conduction system

  • Evaluate chronic disease management of cardiac disorders including pharmacotherapy, lifestyle management and complications

  • Discuss the pathophysiology of congestive heart failure

  • Discuss cardiovascular diseases or surgical procedures that would require in or out-patient care in a healthcare facility

  • Perform a focused cardiovascular assessment

  • Perform routine care for a cardiovascular patient

  • Facilitate education for patients and families including referrals to cardiac rehabilitation programs

  • Identify opportunities for health promotion and disease prevention

  • Who is this course for?

    Although this course is designed for Community Paramedics, it is an excellent comprehensive course for other frontline health and wellness professionals. Students will gain a foundational knowledge and feel confident expanding their knowledge in this field through further education. This course is a great addition to your continuing education program. Note: This course is a required course in the Certificate in Community Paramedicine Care program.

  • How long does it take to complete this course?

    Students may complete this course in as little as one month however you will have access to the course for one year.

  • How do I know I will be competent in the content after this course?

    Students receive formative (knowledge check points) and cumulative (final exams) evaluations in each course. Evaluations are based on the content provided in videos, interviews, research papers and required readings. Content is competency-based meaning each course addresses specific competencies necessary for the student to master. Instruction is provided using a range of resources and much of the content is reviewed or taught by healthcare experts in their respective fields for specific courses. We always recommend implementing a continuing education and review routine for yourself to ensure knowledge retention, patient safety and clinical competence and confidence.

  • What are the prerequisite for this program?

    There are no prerequisites for this program however prior health & wellness education is recommended in order to get the most out of this course.
